AHOY!
We’re here aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a 13-storey vessel hosting roughly 2000 passengers (including about 600 kids) and a crew of 700ish, where the dress code appears to be summer sloppy. Not owning oversized T-shirts and baggy cargo shorts, we’re vying for the “best dressed” award. I think Benedicta’s a shoo-in.
Other than having to pack a suitcase, this trip is about as far as it gets from the nitty-gritty of traveling. The Dawn sidles up to the pier at 48th St. on the Hudson, roughly 25 blocks from our apartment. Benedicta wanted to walk but since I was on suitcase duty I insisted we take the bus. We set out at 10:30 and by 3 o’clock we’d had a leisurely lunch at the Venetian, toured from bow to stern and unpacked our suitcase, sighing triumphantly, knowing there would be no more packing until our return to New York, just as the siren blew for the mandatory life-boat drill.
Today is our only “at sea” day so I thought those of you who have yet to take up cruising might enjoy a window seat, which by the way are plentiful. We decided to start the day off at the jogging track, thus making some effort to offset the feature for which cruises are famous – food! And heck, why not toss a few baskets, too. Benedicta got her work out at the seawater wave pool that has the smell and buoyancy of the ocean without the need to rinse the sand out of your suit. We sunned ourselves to Bob Marley tunes, the specialty of the pool reggae band, before wandering over to the spa. We’ll go for a soak and steam while docked in P-town where we intend to spend part of our shore time aboard the abandoned ship.
Last night we showed up just after the curtain rose for Rosie’s Broadway Belters. After viewing the first number from the last row, we noticed a couple unclaimed reserved seats. Now those were more our style! We’ll try for the same seats tonight for Sheena Easton.
