SHAKALAND, KwaZulu Natal

Sawubona!

Shakaland offers a Zulu immersion filled with tribal culture and dancing. Yes, Joan and I joined in but hopefully there are no pictures to prove it. (Our Zulu leg kicks are not what they used to be!)

The silence surrounding our Zulu hut is erratically pierced by the screech of prowling cats. It's a bit like camping, though we have a red concrete floor and a thatched beehive roof. So, no, it isn't really like camping but there's a tangible feel of the starry night sky breathing through the stillness and folding over us as we settle in to sleep. It's winter in Zululand so I'm curled up under my down comforter awaiting the minstrel who is scheduled to waken us.

Sala Kahle!
